I’ve recorded music since I was a teenager, and for a time pursued creating music with bands, but my instrumental and often very self-indulgent music has probably been the only consistent creative outlet I’ve maintained through whatever life has brought my way.

Below is a non-exhaustive list of some of my releases. If you’re curious, there are more to be found on my bandcamp page.

All music written and recorded by me, John William Evelyn.

All my writing and recording time is currently dedicated to work on the soundtrack for my upcoming game “The Wings of Sycamore”. I look forward to being able to share that soon…

in absence

A direct follow up to ‘sleeping room’. The second of my ambient and largely structureless experimental EPs.

sleeping room

2021 was a very painful year. I was still compelled to create things, though I wanted it to be liberating, not with a preconceived ideal goal or outcome. The result was this EP. Entirely without pre-planned structure, tone, or approach. The only firm idea was to record it entirely live, whatever came out, and make peace with the results. All sounds made with guitar, and an obnoxious number of effects pedals.

A Landscape, Distinct

This EP is a collection of instrumental and largely pretty quiet guitar-based tracks that were deconstructed and used in the creation of The Collage Atlas. As well as some that were ultimately not used in the final game.

It also features my first attempts at writing music for a hole-punch music box.

Sometimes You Just Forget

I so missed actually tying a bow around around a recording, calling it ‘done’, and releasing it. This EP was an exercise in forcing myself to do just that. It features some of my most ‘band-like’ sounding tracks - specifically “Shiver/Shimmer” and “No Perfects, No Comebacks”

Notes & Reminders

Collected Recordings 1999-2006. Extremely lo-fi bedroom recordings. Much of my teenhood was spent either skateboarding with my friends, playing in my terrible punk band, or recording these things quietly in my room. Shared at the time only with 2 or 3 of my closest friends. Offered here more as a document than anything.

Waves

Only shared with a couple of my closest friends upon completion, this marked the first time I used any kind of percussion in my own instrumental music. Programmed using “Korg DS-10” on the Nintendo DS, the results were mixed. As ever, I was torn between making very sleepy and very loud music - ‘Takkun’ being the most stark example.
